Writing That Inspires Me To Write

I’ve wanted to create things that make people feel important feelings for as long as I can remember. When I’m feeling the need to be reminded of what that looks like I have a bank of things that people have written that make me feel those feelings.

In no particular order, here’s six of them

These lyrics in Coney Island - Taylor Swift feat. The National

And do you miss the rogue
Who coaxed you into paradise and left you there?
Will you forgive my soul
When you're too wise to trust me and too old to care?

This scene from How I Met Your Mother

This is a difficult one to just shove in here because I think you need to understand the show to appreciate this scene, and like any scene in a tv show, it’s only made powerful by watching the whole episode.

Just like Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother has become one of those shows I just watch in the background because it’s easy, I was doing that when I first saw this episode, but I remember realising what was happening in this scene and just sitting their mouth wide open on the edge of tears. It’s stunning.

It’s the final five minute of Season 8, Episode 20 - The Time Travelers.

This part of Caitlyn Siehl’s poem DO NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH PEOPLE LIKE ME

Do not fall in love with people like me.
I will take you to museums, and parks, and monuments, and kiss you in every beautiful place, so that you can never go back to them without tasting me like blood in your mouth.
I will destroy you in the most beautiful way possible.
And when I leave you will finally understand, why storms are named after people.

These lyrics from Turning Page - Sleeping at Last

Though we’re tethered to the story we must tell
When I saw you, well, I knew we’d tell it well

This moment from Futurama

Just like the How I Met Your Mother scene, this one really requires the content of the whole episode, although less so the entire series.

So go find the episode THE LATE PHILIP J. FRY

Can I ALSO say, Futurama’s ability to move from hilarious, rude and downright offensive to heartbreaking, sentimental and beautiful is unmatched by any other show.

This line from John Green’s debut novel, Looking for Alaska

So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.
